The sensational New York Times bestseller The Mill River Recluse reminds us that friendship, family, and love can come from the most unexpected places. Perfect for fans of Maeve Binchy.
From the outside, Mill River looks like any sleepy little Vermont town where everyone knows everyone and people never need to lock their doors. There are newcomers for whom this appeals, from police officer Kyle Hansen and his daughter Rowen, who are starting over after heartache, to Claudia Simon, the schoolteacher who is determined to reinvent herself.
But on closer inspection, there are those in Mill River—including a stealthy arsonist, a covetous nurse, and a pilfering priest—who have things they wish to hide. None more than the widow Mary McAllister, who for the past sixty years has secluded herself in her marble mansion overlooking the town. Most of the residents have never even seen the peculiar woman. Only the priest, Father O’Brien, knows the deep secrets that keep Mary isolated—and that, once revealed, will forever change the community.

This is one of those books that you can pass on to anyone whether young or old. Its a book about the human spirit and how we can all strive to be more than we are by giving of ourselves. Most of all, it teaches the value of understanding. No matter what a person has done, each person must be clearly given the chance to be understood why they are the way they are and not solely tobe judged for the moment. I will treasure this book and what it has given me.Product details

The Mill River Recluse A Novel edition by Darcie Chan Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I am a native Vermonter and grew up in the general area of "Mill River" and the amount of research that was done for this story is really impressive. I could picture every place mentioned in the book and it was like being back home. I had gotten the first book in the series "Mill River Recluse" as a freebie from an email list of free books and read it more or less to see how many mistakes I could find about the general area (I found none by the way) I got sucked into the story an ended up buying this book and read it in one day - both books in 2 1/2 days. The way the chapters alternate back and forth between the past and the present is unusual to me but it works out well. It gives a little glimpse of the past in little bits and pieces and does it smoothly. Something I wouldn't have thought would work, but it does. The storyline has so many twists and turns and surprises that I couldn't put it down until I had finished the story... and there is one twist that I never saw coming that made my jaw drop and I even said a word or two out loud that I would be able to say in front of small children. This is a great set of stories and I hope to read more about "Mill River" soon.
Darcie Chan has done it again and swept us up into the life of Mill River and made us care. We ache with them and laugh with them, but most of all, we care and it makes us feel good. The book can be read without having read the first book, although you shouldn't miss it, with some new characters and familiar ones. It explores the depths of families and what they mean. And, they don't just get wrapped up in sugar coating, feelings are raw and real and the members struggle with them. It also addresses how addictions can affect everyone around them. I'd say, get this book and prepare for a new experience and maybe you will find ways to help yourself in the process. As usual, I look forward to more books from Darcie Chan.
As the oldest of three sisters, this story drew me in from the very beginning. The characters are so strong, individual, and full of human strengths and frailties. The small-town, rural setting of Mill River is so like the community my sisters and I grew up in. I found myself truly inside this story, and I felt the inner emotions of each and every one of its female characters. I was and am the sister, the mother, the grandmother, the great-aunt and the friend.
To learn toward the end that Josie was still alive threw me totally off course. At first, it left me feeling deceived and disappointed that my true-to-life involvement in this saga seemed knocked completely out of reality and into some unnatural realm of science fiction. I've lost my own mother and fully understand the reality that when death takes her, life doesn't return her in human form. By the end, though, I realized this story needed a mother's death to resonate with the daughters and make sense of the events that followed in their adult lives. It also used the reappearance of that mother to share the feelings and responsibilities that only a mother can know. This mother explains for us all just how far we'd go to give our children opportunities for fulfillment and happiness in their lives. In the end, I cried with understanding and truly FELT the realities of family importance, forgiveness, abiding love and new beginnings.
"The Mill River Recluse" definitely deserves a 10 Star rating, however, since I am limited, I will rate it the highest rating.....
This is a book which stays with you much longer than where it says "The End"!!!! If this book doesn't become a classic, I am sorely disappointed in readers. I would rank this book with "Jane Eyre", one of my most favorite books of my lifetime.
Mary, the main character, is such a strong, loving and forgiving person and becomes so " real", I wanted to visit with her and learn about her wisdom and strength. I wanted to be her defender against the publics opinion of her and encourage her. I felt so many emotions while reading this unforgettable novel, and I will reread this book again.
All the characters were richly build on solid foundations to the point I could visualize them in my minds eye. When I got to the end of the book I felt extremely sad, but happy for Mary that she no longer had to suffer.
A "knock it out of the park" novel by Darcie Chan!!!!!
